Along with Diamond 'Lil, Nozmo-King was a very popular act and traveled extensively in the Northern Indiana area.
Born and raised in Auburn, Indiana, Mike’s musical background began at a young age when he was found playing the pots and pans from his mother’s kitchen. This developed into weekly drum lessons and practicing in the basement with other musical enthusiasts from the neighborhood.
At the age of fifteen and playing drums with the DeKalb High School show group Conglomeration, Mike was asked to join the Choice band. This continued for five years.
At that time Mike left the group and began playing full time in the Fort Wayne club circuit and the popular Nightshift television show, a venue for new comedians including Tim Allen, Emo Phillips, Judy Tenuta, and Drew Carey. The band at that time was the Voodoo Blues Review and also featured bass player Mike Littlejohn. During 1983-1986, Mike and Mike Littlejohn also performed with Club Flamingo, an Auburn based jazz vocal group.
Later, Mike along with Loui Strahm, Jeff Stone, Jerry Farrington and Diamond Lil formed the group Nozmoking and they continued as the Nightshift band along with regular nightly gigs in the popular Fort Wayne clubs. The band evolved as Souls on Fire and Mike teamed up once again with Mike Penland. The bands success and popularity continued in the tri-state area.
In 1987, Choice was approached to do a reunion show and this event led the Choice band of brothers to continue playing together today. One of Mike’s greatest moments was the opportunity for the band to perform with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee John Fogerty in South Bend, Indiana in 1997.
Mike and his wife Pam live in Auburn. Mike is a Sales Consultant at Auburn Chrysler. Prior to that he had been Operations Manager for Auctions America. Mike had also been with the Auburn Fire Department since 1982 and served as the Deputy Chief of the department. Mike serves on the Executive Board of the DeKalb County Fair Association where he is involved in chairing the entertainment, rides, concessions, sponsorship, and advertising committees. In his spare time, he can be found on the golf course, or cruising in their 1948 Willy’s street rod with fellow groove dogs Mike Littlejohn and Dan Cory. Mike values the friendships made throughout the years and the good times by being a part of Choice. What a sweet ride!
